Typical Role at ZMI - MSI

Employees in Marine Superintendent Department play a critical and integral part in ensuring that ZMI vessels remain operational at all times so that we can serve our clients 100% all of the time.  One such role is a Marine Superintendent or MSI for short.

The main responsibilities for an MSI are to ensure ZMI has continual compliance with international ship management and marine standards and deck maintenance of vessels. An MSI’s aim is to improve our operational efficiency and provide support to vessels so as to meet corporate and client requirements and objectives.

Other areas that an MSI covers are:

  • Managing full compliance of Vessels with the terms laid down in the maritime Acts, Regulations, Conventions, Class requirements and any other legislation which impacts on safety in the work place.
  • Managing the deck maintenance of ZMI Marine owned/managed vessels so they are correctly maintained according to laid down standards and procedures.
  • Drafting and providing input to maintenance and project budgets for the vessels within the guidelines dictated by the terms of the Marine and various contracts.
  • Conducting performance appraisals of Masters annually in November and ensuring that all Vessel Masters & Chief Officers are trained in the use of the appraisal or performance management process. Ensure training addresses SHE-Q performance gaps and needs and that they are closed out.
  • Coordinating SHE-Q related programmes and internal training courses as required by Company, Clients and Contractors.
  • Complying with UAE and International relevant laws and regulations.
  • Complying with STCW, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISPS, IMCA, OCIMF, ISGOTT and related maritime Standards and conventions as amended.

MSI’s liaise with a lot of internal and external stakeholders such as: Marine Service Providers, Clients, Government Agencies, Classification Societies and Flag State Authorities therefore the role is an extremely busy one and there is always something that needs to be done. 

To qualify for this role at ZMI a candidate would need the following:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Master (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency.

POST SCHOOL                     : Nautical Degree

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE        : 1 year Marine (deck) Superintendency experience; 2 Years as Master on Offshore Support Vessels.


Typical Role at ZMI - SHE-Q Coordinator

9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004, OSHAS 18001:2007 that incorporates continuous improvement to be in line with industry best practices.

Employees in SHEQ Department play a critical and integral part in ensuring that ZMI promotes high industry standards.  One such role in SHEQ Department is a SHEQ Coordinator.

The main responsibilities for a SHEQ Coordinator are to monitor and ensure compliance throughout the Company of the ZMI Integrated Management System including the Safety Management System (SMS - ISM) and Quality Management System (QMS) and administration thereof for the fleet of ZMI vessels. Coordinators are responsible for providing SHE and Security (ISPS) related supervision and training to all sea staff where required and as directed by the DPA and SHEQ Manager.

Other areas that a SHEQ Coordinator covers are:

  • Performing/supporting sub-contractors and suppliers audit
  • Performing/supporting audits, inspection and trainings on board our vessels.
  • Responsible for waste management including Corporate Training Program.
  • Assisting in the development of the management system (HSE and Operation Manuals).
  • Bridging the Company Objectives and KPI to every department.
  • Assisting compliance with the international marine regulations and the local requirements for environmental monitoring.

The role is an extremely busy one and there is always something that needs to be done, however it is an extremely rewarding one with great career progression for someone who has a passion for SHEQ.

To qualify for this role at ZMI a candidate would need the following:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: STCW 95 ll/2 COC or STCW lIl/2 COC, or bachelor degree, Proficiency in written & oral English. ISM /IMS & ISPS Internal Auditor certificate.

POST SCHOOL                    : NEBOSH, OSHA or IOSH Safety certificate. ISM / IMS / ISPS Internal Auditor.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE       : Two years Chief Officer, 2nd engineer or Marine SHE-Q Supervisory experience. Knowledge of ISM, ISPS Codes and Corporate Integrated Management Systems.
